Day in the Woods.

January 9th, 2010 by andy

Until the snow started flying, I’d mainly been skating a backyard mini-ramp with a few dudes who couldn’t care less about trying to flip their board or jump down stairs.  It’s been fun not getting kicked out of a spot, having good conversation, and drinking brews on the deck in between runs, and I’ve made several new friends because of it.  One of those new friends,  John Zambrzycki, just sent me a video he shot on a trip to Indiana to skate the bowl known as “Homewoods.”  It looks like a blast and you better believe that you’ll be seeing coverage from it as soon as this weather decides to stop being so wintery.

The 2 guys who were the driving force behind building homewood used to work (possibly still do) for CA Skateparks / Wally Hollyday — the company and designer who built the BGKY skatepark, Nashville Metro, etc. The 2 guys who are from Bloomington (if I remember correctly) and work for CA skatepark designs ended up in BGKY and we met and skated with them there. The BG crew has been up to Homewoods a few times and we brought the Bacon crew up there when they came through on tour in Sept 08 before the bowl was completed. There’s footage of Homewoods in the Bacon video from 08-09. I’m pretty sure one of the guy’s name’s is Elliott - I haven’t talked to them in about a year. If you get up there bring food and camping gear.

Mike is right. Known Mike FOREVER! Cheers, Mike!! Homewoods is the SHIT and if you are down for the cause and know the right people, you can have a seriously memorable time. The owner is Bart Smith with serious help from Sol and Oliver, among others. In fact (incoming shameless self plug), Sol helped me do a project in Nicaragua: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbfbORKQGlE

dope shit going down in south america Nathan, Bart is a really down to earth guy and for sure on another level than most of us. Guys like him and Red and others who build diy stuff are the driving force that keep skateboarding evolving. Keep up the bueno work, and as long as we are self propmoting here’s a link to what’s going on in Kentucky. http://www.bluegrassbowl.blogspot.com/

John, that bowl looks KILLER! What are the specs on it? What part of KY? I am from Bowling Green originally. Have had a hand in most of the projects that have happened there since about ‘86. Will be back there again for a couple months this spring. Plan to bring the Bacon crew through on a short tour sometime mid-April. FYI. - Nate

The concrete bowl is all 6ft with 8ft trannies with the trannny connecting to about 2ft of flatbottom. Benji has skated the owners indoor bowl about 3 years ago so he knows where its at. don’t know if you checked out the latest post but this is the same place. get ahold of Andy when you come back to Ky and we can take a trip up there.

Afraid Benji won;t be on this tour. This one is all about the yung gunz. April 16-23, Nashville to Chicago with our Homewoods/Bloomington stop on Sun, April 18. Any chance that bowl is in our trajectory? I’ll have flyers for the tour out around March and will make sure to post it. But yeah, I wanna check out that bowl, for sure! - Nate
